ALL ABOUT

wrightington HOSPITAL

Wrightington Hospital stands in pleasant open countryside between Southport and Wigan, and was built in the extensive grounds of Wrightington Hall, formerly the home of the Gerard family. Located just half a mile from junction 27 of the M6 motorway, the hospital is readily accessible by road.

Wrightington Hospital's status as an Orthopaedic and Musculosketeal Centre of Excellence originated with the seminal work of Professor Sir John Charnley, who pioneered hip replacement surgery involving the techniques of low-friction arthroplasty and also innovative advances to counter post-operative infection. The first ever total hip replacement operation was performed by Sir Charnley at Wrightington in 1960.

While drawing strength from the past, the hospital is also at the forefront of innovation, cementing its reputation as a hospital at the leading edge of both practice and research.

Wrightington's reputation for excellence attracts highly talented Orthopaedic Consultants who specialise in hip and joint surgery, and in the medical disciplines of rheumatology and rehabilitation. This multi-disciplinary approach produces important synergies, particularly in the field of inflammatory arthritis.
