Professor Tim Board, Orthopaedic Consultant at Wrightington Hospital, recognised across the world as a Centre of Excellence in the treatment of musculo-skeletal disease, hip and joint replacement surgery, designed the feasibility trial that will last two years.

The study will compare the two main types of hip replacement - fully cemented or hybrid (cemented stem and uncemented cup) – and aims to find out which type of hip leads to better patient function. The study is a collaboration between WWL, the University of Manchester, the North West Surgical Trials Centre and the Universities of Bristol and Oxford.

Prof. Board, who is also the trial’s Chief Investigator, said: “It has taken about a year of work to secure this funding.

“Patients at Wrightington will be the first to be offered to take part in the trial which will allow us to tell patients which implants would give them better function after surgery, enabling them, and their surgeon, to make better-informed decisions about their care.”

Almost all of WWL’s patients having primary hip replacement will be suitable to take part in the trial.
