Background

Professor Raj Murali qualified from the University of Madras, India in 1986. He then completed his basic surgical training in England and the higher specialist orthopaedic training in Aberdeen. He underwent specialist training in hand and wrist surgery. He was appointed as a full time Consultant at WWL in March 2000.  Raj specialises in the management of all disorders of the hand and wrist, including sports injuries.  He gained extensive training in these areas through a national hand and wrist training fellowship in Nottingham (Queens Medical Centre) and Derby (Pulvertaft Hand Unit) in 1998.

He has a large clinical practice that caters not only for the local population of Wigan, but also provides a tertiary referral service to other trusts in the Northwest. Complex trauma patients, including those from premier football and rugby clubs are also referred. His dedication to clinical work has been rewarded by the award of a bronze clinical excellence award which places him in the top 10% in the country.

He has published several peer reviewed papers on various aspects of hand and wrist conditions. These have also been presented at regional, national and international meetings.  His current areas of research include the clinical outcomes following hand surgery, rehabilitation of the injured hand, surgical management of ligament injuries of the wrist, design of new instrumentation and management of complex trauma to the wrist.  He held the position of Clinical Director of Research and Development in the Trust for four years.

Professor Murali is a keen teacher and is the foundation programme tutor for the Trust. He pioneered and runs the popular MCh Orth programme for orthopaedic doctors for which he has been awarded a personal chair from the University of Edge Hill. He is a faculty member of several courses in the country and is also examiner for the FRCS (Tr & Orth) exit examination.

He also plays an active managerial role in the Trust having the held the position of Deputy Medical Director for one year. He is presently the lead for consultant appraisals and is also the Clinical Director for Orthopaedics.
