Background

Sarang is on the Specialist Register as a Consultant Rheumatologist. He trained in the Mersey Deanery as a Specialist Registrar in Rheumatology. During his training he worked at University Hospital Aintree, Liverpool; Countess of Chester Hospital, Chester, Halton Hospital, Runcorn and St Helens and Knowsley NHS Trust. He was part of the team that won the BSR innovation award in 2007 for the Aintree Early Arthritis Clinic. He started learning musculoskeletal ultrasound in 2006 and completed an ultrasound fellowship at Aintree University Hospital. He has completed EULAR train the trainer’s certification and EFSUMB level 2 certification in MsK Ultrasound. He was working as a Consultant Rheumatologist at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, North Wales, Bangor/Llandudno sites from January 2012 to May 2016 where he set up an ultrasound service and All Wales Ultrasound Training Network whilst in his post there. He was also a Royal College of Physicians tutor from August 2015 to May 2016. 

He took up the post of Consultant Rheumatologist at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) and provides a comprehensive rheumatology service. His areas of interest are inflammatory joint disease such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis, crystal arthropathy such as gout. He runs a multi-disciplinary one stop early arthritis service and a rheumatology ultrasound service. He does peripheral clinics at Leigh and Wigan (Thomas Linacre centre). He runs a monthly combined rheumatology-upper limb clinic with orthopaedics. 

He enjoys teaching and is a keen teacher. He is a tutor at national level for musculoskeletal ultrasound and has taught on BSR and EULAR ultrasound courses. He is involved in the clinical trials and the research programme at WWL and has close links with Bangor University School of Sports Exercise and Health Sciences. He does regular teaching sessions for junior doctors, General Practice, multi-disciplinary teams, patients and medical students. He is on the steering committee for the MMED programme in rheumatology delivered through collaboration between WWL and Edge Hill University.
